Full list of Mississippi Cross Country/Track and Field commitments
Starkville High School senior Sterling Scott announced his verbal commitment to join the University of Missouri Track and Field program, per his Instagram account.
The best triple jumper Mississippi has ever seen is none other than Starkville's Sterling Scott. According to Milesplit's data, Scott's mark of 49-4.25 makes him the all-time state record holder. This was done at the MHSAA 6A North State meet. While he still has his senior season ahead of him, he will look to better that mark and further the state record that he currently holds.
Scott had an extremely successful 2022 outdoor campaign, as he is the reigning state champion for both the triple jump and long jump in class MHSAA 6A. He capped off his season by winning the triple jump national title at the 2022 Adidas Outdoor Nationals. Scott also placed fifth at this meet in the long jump.
It was particularly in the latter half of the season that Scott made his name known. After the Golden Wave Invitational, he went on to win the next six triple jump competitions that he competed in. For long jump, Scott started jumping 23 feet and farther, starting at the 2022 MHSAA Region 1-6A Championships.
Looking into the coming season, Scott is ranked as the sixth-best returning triple-jumper in the country. While the triple jump is his strong suit, he is also ranked 38th among the USA's returning high school long jumpers. In the state of Mississippi, he is the top returning triple jumper and the second-ranked returning long jumper based on last season's personal bests.

Scott will be joining a Missouri squad that knows how to develop triple jumpers. Missouri's Georgi Nachev placed second at the SEC Indoor Championships and third at the SEC Outdoor Championships in the Triple Jump.
When asked about his college decision, here is what Scott had to say:
"I chose the best place for my academic, athletic, and social development."
